Music has always been a large part of my life. I learned how to play piano at 7 years old and flute at 11 years old, soon becoming active in honor bands across the country--even playing at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Upon entering college, however, I made the tough decision to set aside my music and put all my efforts towards my future career in the sciences. Surprisingly, this turned out to be a huge mistake. Although I loved science, I was unhappy focusing all my time on it exclusively. So even though it had been a year since I'd played a single note, I auditioned for Tiger Band. Although I had to work through a few meal breaks that first week of band camp, I finally regained my old confidence and skill level. Looking back, I had no idea what an impact being a member of Tiger Band would make on me. My grades improved and I found out that being in Tiger Band is exactly like being with 325 of your closest friends. It is the ultimate example of teamwork. Every detail is magnified on the field, so each individual's movements have to be flawlessly in sync with the entire band or else it is painfully obvious to everyone in Tiger Stadium. Every member thinks, breathes, and steps as one. It was an amazing experience to be able to march every pregame and halftime show in the season proudly sporting the purple and gold. Tiger Band has taught me the importance of maintaining a healthy life/work balance, how amazing things can happen when a group of people strive towards a common goal, and to not be afraid to fight for your passions.
